Tra Su is a Cajuput Forest and eco-tourism area established in 1983, covering nearly 850 hectares in Văn Giáo commune, Tịnh Biên district. This is a typical floodplain forest of the Hau River region, playing a crucial role in water regulation and climate control for the entire Ba Mountains area. The forest is also home to many rare animal and plant species within the Vietnam’s protected forest system.
What visitors will immediately notice here is the chance to immerse themselves in nature. Not only will they be captivated by the green space with the shady Melaleuca trees, but they will also get close encounters with a variety of birds and rare wildlife. This area has been developed into a conservation site for many tropical species that thrive in the Southwestern region of Vietnam. Local people use boats to take visitors deep into the Melaleuca forest. While on the boat, you may spot birds perched on tree trunks and various species of lotus in full bloom. If you wish, visitors can ask the boat driver to stop so they can fully experience the tranquil atmosphere and capture the moments of nature.
Best Season to Visit:
The flood season, from September to November each year, is considered the best time to experience the beauty of the Melaleuca forest. As the water rises, the trees flourish, and the water’s surface is covered with a blanket of water plants, creating a picturesque scene. The flood season also provides favorable conditions for the development of various fish and shrimp species, making it an attractive destination for many bird species.

From the pier, visitors can choose to travel by motorboat (tắc ráng) or traditional wooden boat. The motorboat will travel faster and farther. During the journey, visitors will pass through small streams, heading straight into the heart of the Melaleuca forest. Along the way, you might see locals harvesting honey from Melaleuca flowers in hives placed in the forest. This is a great opportunity to relax, enjoy the scenery, and witness the local way of life.
Whether you choose to explore the forest by motorboat or wooden boat, it’s a great chance to capture beautiful photos amidst the green space, with the water completely covered by water plants. If you’re lucky enough to visit on a sunny day, the sunlight filtering through the tree canopy creates an enchanting atmosphere.
Tra Su Restaurant has two main dining areas:
One is located outside the forest, on both sides of the boat pier, and the other is a floating hut on the water inside the forest (next to the scenic viewing tower). At these dining spots, visitors can enjoy local specialties from the Mekong Delta such as: grilled snakehead fish, linh fish hotpot with wild reeds (the flood season is also the season for this fish), fermented fish hotpot, coconut heart salad, and Vietnamese pancakes (bánh xèo).
